Did you know that the beautiful dhow boats you see at the sea and the superfast powerboats racing against each other in Dubai have one thing in common; they were built at Ajman's Dhow yard.
Located on the north side of the Ajman Creek and five minutes from Ramada Hotel and Suites is the world famous Dhow Yard. It is said to be the world's largest active dhow building yard and one of Ajman's biggest tourist attractions.
What is a Dhow?
Dhows are conventional boats used by the Arabs since centuries. They are built using traditional tools and guidelines passed from generation to generation. There are no blueprints, just pure skill and basic guidelines and the dhows which come out of this yard are of the highest quality in the whole country!
At any time, you can see 20-30 boats under different stages of construction at the yard. The dhow's exterior is mainly made with fibreglass material instead of wood while timber is the preferred material for the hull and mast of the boat. The yard is also known for manufacturing modern speed boats and lightweight crafts which are used for Dubai powerboat racing.
Dhow boats are iconic symbols of UAE along with the falcon. When you visit the yard, you will find interesting souvenirs up for sale. The Dhow Yard is an integral part of Ajman for it not only brings in toursits but also helps to preserve the skills and craft of dhow building passed down from generations.
